Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs was arrested earlier this week after a domestic disturbance that took place on Saturday morning, May 23rd. Five charges have been leveled against Jacobs after his arrest by the Hobart-Lawrence police department. By law, Jacobs is considered innocent until proven guilty, but this incident could have an impact on Jacobs future with the Packers. Today, we analyze the potential impact of Josh Jacobs’ arrest on the Green Bay Packers.

Analyzing the Impact of Josh Jacobs Arrest on the Packers: The Charges

Five charges have been leveled against Jacobs after his arrest. They include:

Battery (domestic abuse)

Criminal damage to property (domestic abuse)

Disorderly conduct (domestic abuse)

Strangulation and suffocation

Intimidation of a victim

Jacobs released a statement through his attorneys regarding the incident. It read, “Josh vehemently denies the allegations, and this matter is in the early stages of investigation with important evidence that has not yet been made public. We ask for fairness and restraint while the judicial process takes its course.”

The Packers also released a statement which read, “We are aware of the matter involving Josh Jacobs. As it is an ongoing legal situation, we will withhold further comment.”

The situation remains fluid and more information will likely come to light in the near future. How this situation proceeds will have a big impact on how the league and the team handles this.

What the League and the Packers Can Do

Regardless of the outcome of any legal proceedings, the NFL can take disciplinary action against a player involved in domestic violence.

A first-time offender gets a baseline suspension of six games with adjustments made either up or down for aggravating or mitigating factors.

The league typically conducts its own investigations into these matters and can reach an independent decision even if the player is acquitted or the charges are dropped because the accuser declines to press charges.

The Packers also have choices to make as a result of this incident. They could wait and see how the legal process plays out before taking any action involving Jacobs. They could also decide to move on from Jacobs and release him as a result of his arrest.

Jacobs is entering his third season with the Packers. He enjoyed an outstanding debut season in Green Bay in 2024, gaining 1,329 yards and running for 15 touchdowns. Last season, Jacobs struggled with nagging injuries that caused him to miss two full games and limited him in several others. He still led the Packers with 929 yards rushing and 13 rushing touchdowns.

The Packers signed Jacobs to a four-year contract starting with the 2024 season. This will be the third year of that deal. According to spotrac.com, Jacobs will carry a cap hit of a little more than $14.54 million. His 2027 cap hit is currently scheduled to be $16.625 million.

Analyzing the Impact of Josh Jacobs Arrest on the Packers: The Running Back Room

The Packers obviously have decisions to make regarding Jacobs’ future with the team. Running back was already considered a position without much proven depth behind Jacobs. The Packers parted ways with last year’s primary backup Emanuel Wilson. Right now, Chris Brooks stands second on the depth chart.

None of the other players on the roster have much NFL experience. MarShawn Lloyd will be starting his third NFL season, but injuries have limited him to one regular season game in his first two years with the team. Other players on the roster include Damien Martinez and Pierre Strong, Jr., who spent time on the practice squad. The Packers also added undrafted free agent rookie Jaden Nixon this offseason.

Even before this incident, there were rumors that the Packers could look to add a veteran backup running back to try to add depth and talent at the position.

Even if Jacobs remains on the team, this incident underscores the team’s need to add a reliable backup to the roster. In his two seasons with the team, Jacobs has been a focal point of the Packers offense. Now there are a lot more questions than answers concerning his future with the team and his availability for this season.
