The Green Bay Packers will continue to work this offseason with OTAs, and minicamps scheduled over the next two months. The team is coming off back-to-back playoff appearances but hopes to contend for a Super Bowl title this season. The roster is deep and talented and for the most part, the starting jobs are known, pending injuries or a surprise improvement by some players. But there are still positions where the starters are currently unsettled. Here is a look at the Packers biggest position battles as of now. They are not listed in any particular order.
The Packers Biggest Position Battles: Left Tackle
The left tackle spot will pit incumbent Rasheed Walker against 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan. Walker has started for the past two seasons and has done a solid job protecting the blindside of quarterback Jordan Love. He graded out as a good pass blocker but struggled more blocking for the run according to Pro Football Focus.
Injuries limited Morgan to just six games last season. The coaching staff moved him to right guard when training camp started, figuring that would give him the best chance to play as a rookie, although he played left tackle in college.
Walker will be entering the final year of his contract this year, so he has a lot at stake. Morgan is looking to crack the starting lineup which is expected of a former first round pick. He needs a strong camp to unseat Walker.
Add this year’s second round pick, Anthony Belton, as a dark horse candidate.
Right Guard
Sean Rhyan is the incumbent, but he will be challenged by Morgan if the second-year man doesn’t win the left tackle job.
Like Walker, Rhyan will be entering the final year of his entry-level contract this season. He won the starting job at right guard in training camp last season, holding off Morgan. When he was healthy, Morgan rotated in for a few series each game.
We’ll see if Rhyan can win the job again in 2025.
The Packers Biggest Position Battles: Wide Receiver
The Packers will have a deeper receiving room after adding Matthew Golden and Savion Williams in the first and third rounds of this year’s draft. But how will the rotation shake out?
Who will start and where? Will Jayden Reed continue to line up primarily in the slot? Will Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks start or will Golden and Williams see more playing time? Who will win Love’s trust? Will Golden be able to fill the role of Christian Watson as a deep threat? What role will Watson play when he gets healthy again?
There are a lot of questions to be answered at this position but there is also plenty of talent and potential.
Edge Rusher
Rashan Gary will lock down one starting spot, but who will line up on the opposite side of him? Kingsley Enagbare will try to hold on to the starting job he took over after Preston Smith was traded to Pittsburgh. He will get competition from 2023 first-round pick Lukas Van Ness and from Brenton Cox who played well down the stretch last season as a rotational player.
GM Brian Gutekunst stated he was looking for a big jump from Van Ness as he enters his third season in the NFL. The Packers knew the Iowa alum was a raw talent when they selected him, but now they hope to see their investment in Van Ness pay off.
The Packers Biggest Position Battles: Cornerback
A lot depends on whether Jaire Alexander remains with the Packers and then whether he stays healthy. If the answer to both those questions is yes, Alexander is one starter for sure. If no, then Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, and Carrington Valentine will be the favorites to assume the three starting jobs with two on the boundary and one in slot. Javon Bullard will also be in the mix in the slot.
We’ll know more about Alexander’s status before training camp starts and that will go a long way towards sorting out the starters at this position.
