The 2025 NFL Draft is days away and the Green Bay Packers have eight picks overall including the 23rd overall pick in round one. GM Brian Gutekunst needs to do a good job at the draft if the Packers are going to go from a playoff team to a true Super Bowl contender next season. The Packers have positions they need to address in this draft and other positions where they will want to add depth. Here are five bold predictions for the Green Bay Packers in the 2025 NFL Draft.
Five Bold Predictions for the Packers in the 2025 NFL Draft, Number Five: The Packers Take a QB on Day Three
Gutekunst indicated he wanted to go back to taking a quarterback in the later rounds of the draft nearly every year much like Ron Wolf did for the Packers in the 90s. The results yielded developmental quarterbacks that backed up Brett Favre and were often traded for future draft picks.
Among the players the Packers picked included Matt Hasselbeck, Aaron Brooks, Ty Detmer, and Mark Brunell.
The Packers seem set at quarterback for 2025 with Jordan Love as the starter and Malik Willis as the number two QB. Willis will be entering the final year of his current contract in 2025, so the Packers have to think about developing another backup. The quarterback the Packers draft may spend the year on the practice squad, but if all goes well, he will need to be ready to be the backup in 2026.
Number Four: The Packers Make at Least One Trade to Add Picks
The Packers have only eight picks in this year’s draft after having making 11 picks last year and 13 in 2023.
Look for Gutekunst to make a move at some point in the draft to land some additional picks, especially on day three of the draft.
The Packers have done a good job of finding starters and contributors on day three like Zach Tom, Romeo Doubs, Rasheed Walker, and Isaiah McDuffie.
The more bites at the apple the Packers have, the more likely they are to hit on another pick. Don’t be surprised if one or more trades are made to add picks during the draft.
Five Bold Predictions for the Packers in the 2025 NFL Draft, Number Three: The Packers Draft Multiple Defensive Linemen
Defensive line remains a big need for the Packers. Jeff Hafley has said he wants to get more pressure on opposing quarterbacks using his front four. That requires adding talent on the line.
Inside, the Packers need to replace run stuffing defensive tackle T.J. Slaton who left as a free agent. Devonte Wyatt will be entering the final year of his contract this season and Kenny Clark will see his cap hit increase to more than $30 million for 2026, so he could be in his final season with the Pack as well.
Gutekunst likes to double down or even triple down on areas of need in the draft and this year will be no exception. Defensive line will be one position he will emphasize this year.
Number Two: The Packers Select Multiple Offensive Linemen
The offensive line is also a need although not as immediate as the defensive line. The Packers lack depth all the way around and they have linemen entering the final year of their contract including starting tackles Tom and Walker and right guard Sean Rhyan. The Packers won’t sign all three of them to new deals so replacements must be found.
Elgton Jenkins will be moving from left guard to center. His cap hit will be almost $25 million in 2026 unless he restructures his deal.
The Packers need to fortify the line, both at tackle and along the interior. It may not be an immediate need, but multiple picks will be used here this year.
Five Bold Predictions for the Packers in the 2025 NFL Draft, Number One: The Packers Select a Receiver in the First Round
The Packers haven’t selected a wide receiver in the first round of the NFL Draft since they took Javon Walker back in 2002. The team has talent here but lacks a go-to receiver which increases the possibility that Gutekunst opts to add a wideout in the first round for the first time since Favre was under center.
We already know Christian Watson will miss at least half the season as he rehabs from knee surgery. He and Doubs are both entering the final year of their contracts.
The Packers have tried to select a receiver in the first round before under Gutekunst including 2020, but the players they wanted were off the board. That year, the Pack selected Love instead as their quarterback of the future.
This will finally be the year the Packers use a first-round pick at the wide receiver position. They will need this player to make an impact as a rookie and beyond.
