The trade rumors concerning the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf continue to heat up. The Packers need for an established go-to receiver has been discussed throughout the offseason with GM Brian Gutekunst and running back Josh Jacobs among the people in the Packers organization discussing the need with the media. Here is the latest concerning trade rumors involving the Packers and D.K. Metcalf:

Packers D.K. Metcalf Trade Rumors What Is Being Discussed

The rumors started heating up over the weekend. According to Seahawks reporter Corbin Smith, Seattle is asking for a lot to acquire Metcalf. The asking price appears to be a first-round pick and a young wide receiver.

The two young receivers discussed were either Romeo Doubs or Dontayvion Wicks. They would help the Seahawks fill the void at wide receiver created by the trade of Metcalf.

Keep in mind that the San Francisco 49ers just traded Deebo Samuel to Washington for a fifth-round pick. As part of the deal, the Commanders are paying Samuel’s $17.55 million salary in full. Even if there is no salary retention in a trade for Metcalf, this is a lot higher price tag than the 49ers received for Samuel.

This would also mean the Packers would be trading away their first-round pick during the very first time the city of Green Bay is hosting the NFL Draft. Gutekunst already indicated that the team would still be open to trading their first-round pick despite hosting the draft, but this would certainly be a letdown for Packers fans in attendance unless the trade was announced during the draft.

What Metcalf Can Bring to the Table

Metcalf has played six seasons with the Seahawks since they selected him in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. The former Ole’ Miss star has earned Pro Bowl honors twice and went over 1,000 yards receiving in three seasons.

In 2024, Metcalf fell just short of 1,000 yards. He caught 66 passes for 992 yards and five touchdowns. He missed two games and would have almost certainly gained more than 1,000 yards had he played in all 17 games.

Metcalf has been durable over the course of his NFL career. He has missed three games in his six seasons with Seattle. At 27, he should still have several productive seasons left before he begins to slow down.

Because of his rare combination of size and speed, Metcalf would give the Packers an ideal replacement for Christian Watson who is expected to miss at least half of the 2025 NFL season. He stands 6’4” and weighs 235 pounds. At the 2019 scouting combine, he was timed at 4.33 in the 40-yard dash.

He would certainly provide Jordan Love a proven, go-to receiver if the Packers pull the trigger on this deal.

Packers D.K. Metcalf Trade Rumors: The Possibilities

Metcalf has one season left on his current contract. He has a base salary of $18 million and a cap hit of $31.9 million. Seattle is currently in need of more cap space while the Packers have plenty of cap space and can easily free up a lot more by restructuring existing player deals. The cap should not hurt the Packers chances of making a trade.

Metcalf will be a UFA next offseason. Of course, Gutekunst could always seek to sign Metcalf to an extension to give the Packers more long-term return on this potential trade.

The key question is whether Gutekunst can add a wide receiver either in the draft or via trade, while giving up less. The Samuel trade cost the Commanders a mere fifth-round pick and the proposed deal for Metcalf would cost the Packers significantly more.

Recent rumors also indicate that the New York Jets could release former Packers wideout Davante Adams if they can’t find a trade partner for him. That could mean the Pack could bring back Adams without having to give up any draft picks or players to acquire Adams. They would still obviously have to pay his salary.

Gutekunst could also add a receiver using a high draft pick. But could a rookie step in and immediately provide the Packers with a go-to receiver remains a question.

The new league year starts in a few weeks. How the Packers try to improve the receiver position will be a big question heading into the draft and free agency.
