The Green Bay Packers have a lot of depth at wide receiver. This young group of wideouts possesses talent although entering training camp it was unclear which players would start and what role each of them would play. But now, in the third week of training camp, we are beginning to get a clearer picture of who will play where. The Packers wide receiver depth chart is coming into focus. Here is a look at the depth chart. Obviously, injuries and strong play by any player can change these rankings between now and the start of the regular season.
Packers Wide Receiver Depth Chart Coming Into Focus: First String
Chrisitan Watson and Romeo Doubs are the first-string boundary receivers with Jayden Reed lining up in the slot.
Watson remains the most likely player to emerge as the team’s number one receiver. He has a rare combination of size and speed. Watson’s biggest issues have been consistency and staying healthy. He’s had a couple of injury scares in training camp but thus far, he’s remained healthy and ready to play.
Doubs has the most consistency of the receiving corps. He also has developed excellent chemistry with starting quarterback Jordan Love. When Love needs a key third down completion or is in the red zone, he tends to look for Doubs and the Nevada alum makes plays. He’s been outstanding in training camp and continues to impress coaches and teammates alike.
Reed led the Packers in catches and yards and tied Doubs for the most touchdown passes last year while starting in the slot. He accomplished that despite playing only 56 percent of the team’s offensive snaps.
The Michigan State alum continues to play well in training camp. He finds ways to get open and make plays. He will be looking for more targets in 2024.
Second String
Thus far, the second-string receivers are Dontayvion Wicks and Malik Heath on the perimeter with Bo Melton in the slot.
Wicks showed flashes of playmaking ability last season, especially in the second half of the season. He is currently considered the team’s top deep threat after Watson. The Packers are hoping the former Virginia star takes a step forward in his second NFL season.
Both Heath and Melton were feel-good stories last season. Heath made the team as an undrafted free agent after a strong training camp and Melton spent most of the year on the practice squad before playing well down the stretch. Melton was the first Packers receiver to record more than 100 yards receiving in a game last season.
While neither are locks to make the roster, both are determined to build on their surprise performances of a year ago.
Packers Wide Receiver Depth Chart Coming Into Focus: The Rest
The rest of the players listed are third string or lower and are considered longshots to make the final 53-man roster.
Grant DuBose has stood out the most out of these players. The 2023 seventh round pick suffered an injury that limited him in training camp. He’s earned some real praise from head coach Matt LaFleur and hopes to break through this season and make the roster.
Samori Toure enters his third season but he’s yet to establish a role in the offense. While Toure remains a capable receiver, the Packers depth at this position is working against him.
Dimitri Stanley works out of the slot. He had some nice moments at Family Night and hopes to make enough of an impression as an undrafted free agent to at least make the practice squad. His father, Walter Stanley, played for the Packers in the late 80s.
Julian Hicks and Jalen Wayne are long shots and will have to excel in the preseason to have any chance to stick around.
Overall, the Packers have a lot of talent and depth at the wide receiver position, and it will not be easy for these players to make the roster.
