The Green Bay Packers are a few weeks away from starting training camp and beginning preparations for the 2026 NFL season. With that in mind, here is a look at the Packers three deepest positions entering training camp. Keep in mind some of these positions also have question marks which is hardly surprising in the salary cap era. Rankings are based on a combination of overall talent and depth at the position. Obviously, injuries, breakthrough players or slumping players can change this equation during the season.
Ranking the Packers Deepest Positions Entering Training Camp, Number Three: Wide Receiver
The Packers parted ways with two key pieces from last season in Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks. They still have a solid top three and there is some depth behind them.
Christian Watson and Matthew Golden will start on the perimeter, and Jayden Reed will be the primary slot receiver.
The depth will come from second-year man Savion Williams, veteran Bo Melton, and return specialist Skyy Moore.
There are some talented candidates fighting for jobs as well with Isaiah Neyor and J. Michael Sturdivant leading the list.
Number Two: Defensive Tackle
This position seemed like a weakness last season, but GM Brian Gutekunst addressed it over the offseason both in free agency and the draft. The Packers are also switching to a 3-man front in their base under new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon.
The Packers are getting veteran Devonte Wyatt back from a season-ending injury that cut short his 2025 campaign. Wyatt adds pass rush from the interior of the line and Micah Parsons described the importance of Wyatt to the defense last season.
The Packers also signed free agent Javon Hargrave this offseason. Assuming he has something left in the tank, he will also fortify the pass rush as well.
In the third round of the draft, the Packers added Chris McClellan. He can play all three positions along the defensive line. The Packers love the versatility McClellan brings to the table, but how much he’ll contribute as a rookie remains to be seen.
Nazir Stackhouse provides depth as a run-stopping nose tackle as does Jonathan Ford. Karl Brooks gives the team experienced depth and has gotten pressure on the passer in a rotational role.
Ranking the Packers Deepest Positions Entering Training Camp, Number One: Safety
The Packers top three at safety are as good as any team in the NFL. Xavier McKinney was first team All Pro in 2024 and second team All Pro last season. Because of his ball hawking skills and football intelligence, opposing quarterbacks hesitate to throw deep over the middle of the field. McKinney also provides leadership to the secondary.
Evan Williams took more steps forward in his second season and is playing at a near Pro Bowl level. Williams makes plays close to the line of scrimmage and can help stop the run. He also plays well in coverage. Williams is smart and sees the field well. With another strong season and he should earn Pro Bowl honors.
Javon Bullard starts as the slot corner but is a natural safety. He could fill in at either safety spot if injuries strike.
The top three give the Packers a talented and deep group at safety. The Packers hope McKinney can make more interceptions like he did in 2024. He had eight picks that season including five in his first five games with the team. Last year, he fell off to just two.
Kitan Oladapo gives the Packers some experience and size as a depth piece and also contributes on special teams.
This is the team’s deepest and most talented position, top to bottom, as of right now.
