The Green Bay Packers will open training camp in less than a month. The team is optimistic heading into the 2025 NFL season and hopes to improve after their second straight playoff appearance. While there are clear cut favorites for most positions in the starting lineup, there are some positions that are most definitely up for grabs as we head towards the start of the new season. Here is a look at the top five position battles we can expect entering training camp for the 2025 season:

Packers Position Battle Entering Training Camp 2025, Number Five: Safety & Slot

We know Xavier McKinney will be one starting safety, but the other spot will be up for grabs. Both Javon Bullard and Evan Williams started games there in 2024. Bullard was the higher draft choice but seemed to play better in the slot as a rookie. The team played its best in the secondary last season with Williams at safety and Bullard in the slot.

With the addition of Nate Hobbs, however, the Packers may have a battle at the slot between Bullard and Hobbs.

There will be competition for these two spots in the secondary as training camp begins.

Number Four: Right Guard

In training camp last season, there was a battle at right guard between Sean Rhyan and 2024 first-round pick Jordan Morgan. Those same two players will likely compete again this year.

Rhyan won the job although early in the season, Morgan rotated into the lineup for several series in each game to give him valuable experience.

While Morgan will battle for the left tackle spot, if he doesn’t win it, he will again fight with Rhyan for the right guard spot.

Rhyan faces a critical year in 2025 as he enters the final year of his entry-level contract.

Packers Position Battle Entering Training Camp 2025, Number Three: Linebacker

We know Quay Walker and Edgerrin Cooper will start but the third linebacker spot remains up for grabs. Veteran Isaiah McDuffie remains the incumbent. He plays the run well and is a smart player but struggles in pass coverage because of his lack of speed and athleticism.

Ty’Ron Hopper has the athleticism and speed that McDuffie lacks but didn’t grasp the playbook well as a rookie and only played a handful of plays on defense. If Hopper shows he’s ready for a bigger role, he could challenge for the starting job.

The Packers also signed former first-round pick Isaiah Simmons who will be playing linebacker this season. Simmons also has elite athleticism but has never found a permanent position in the NFL. If he has a strong training camp and preseason, he could also figure in the mix for the third linebacker spot.

Number Two: Wide Receiver

The Packers have a lot of depth at wide receiver, but they don’t know who will play where. Will first round pick Matthew Golden earn a starting role as a rookie. What role with third-round pick Savion Williams play this season?

Jayden Reed remains the favorite in the slot. In addition to the two rookies, Romeo Doubs and Dontayvion Wicks will also be fighting for targets on the boundary. The Pack also added veteran Mecole Hardman is also in the mix although he remains a long shot.

The returning receivers need to be more consistent and reduce the number of dropped passes they had last season. By the second half of the season, Christian Watson may be ready to return from knee surgery and will also figure in the mix.

Packers Position Battle Entering Training Camp 2025, Number One: Left Tackle

Rasheed Walker enters his contract year as the incumbent left tackle. He’s done a solid job of protecting Jordan Love’s blind side the last two seasons, but it’s not clear if the Packers sign him to a new deal.

Morgan will be his chief competition. He played left tackle in training camp but competed primarily at right guard last season.

Ideally, the Packers would like to see Morgan take over the position. Whether it happens this year, or the following season or never actually happens remains to be seen.

This is an important position. Whoever loses the battle likely becomes the swing tackle.
