As he enters his third NFL season, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs continues to show improvement on the field. Each day at training camp, Doubs reminds his teammates and coaches that while he may not be the fastest or biggest receiver on the Green Bay roster, he is one of the most productive and consistent players who finds a way to make plays.
Packers WR Romeo Doubs Continues to Shine: His Career So Far
The Packers selected Doubs in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He was one of three receivers the team selected that year. Second round pick Christian Watson got most of the attention while Doubs quietly went about his business.
The Nevada alum played in 13 games and started seven of them as a rookie. He caught 42 passes for 425 yards and three touchdowns playing with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback. He eventually won the trust of Rodgers, which was no easy accomplishment for a rookie.
Doubs immediately stood out in training camp because of his precise routes and consistency. Because he wasn’t working with the first-string players in training camp, he got extra time in drills and practice with then second-string quarterback Jordan Love.
In 2023, Doubs started 16 games while playing in all 17. Love took over as the quarterback and the chemistry between the duo was immediately recognizable. Doubs caught 59 passes for 674 yards and tied for the team lead with eight touchdown catches.
Competition Is Fierce
The Packers enter training camp in 2024 with a very deep and talented receiving corps. There is no clear- cut number one receiver, but the Pack has at least five wideouts on the roster who are capable of being dangerous and productive NFL players.
Doubs is presently battling for a role in the offense with teammates like Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Bo Melton.
While Doubs may not have one trait or skill that is outstanding, he is consistently good in all areas that receivers are expected to play in Matt LaFleur’s offense. Because of this, Love often looks for Doubs first I the red zone or on important third-down plays when the Pack needs a completion to keep a drive alive.
Packers WR Romeo Doubs Continues to Shine: The Coach’s Take
In training camp, Doubs has continued to impress. Earlier this week, LaFleur explained why he’s been so enamored with Doubs’ performance and progress and impressed with his work ethic.
“How he prepares, [he’s] very deliberate,” LaFleur told reporters. “[He] takes coaching, you can coach Romeo very hard. Night and day better than when as a rookie. Ability to get off the ball, he’s a great route runner, takes a lot of pride in his routes, very strong hands, he catches more balls than anyone in this building, pre and post practice. He’s always working. It’s not a shock to me. The guy puts in the work and you’re seeing the benefits of that.”
Iron Sharpens Iron
Doubs has not only impressed his coaches, but his teammates have taken notice of the strong play from the third-year receiver.
In practice, he’s gone head-to-head with Jaire Alexander, the Packers top cover corner and one of the better cornerbacks in the league.
Doubs played well and has beaten Alexander on several plays. Love has found Doubs for key gains and scores even when Alexander is lining up opposite him. After getting beat early in practice, Alexander asked to cover Doubs more often, but the receiver continued to catch the ball.
After practice, Alexander was quick to praise Doubs. “I think Doubs is a close second for my top receivers in the league,” Alexander said. He ranked former Packer Davante Adams as his number one. “I always want to go against Doubs. That dude is really freaking good. He came in his rookie year, not catching a single pass on me, now we’re going after 50-50 balls now. The dude is really good.”
Despite his strong start to training camp, Doubs still has a lot of competition for playing time. But don’t bet against him carving out a regular role in the Green Bay offense in 2024.
