Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs struggled through the 2024 campaign. He disappointed the team and himself and even earned a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. But so far this season, Doubs has lifted his game and established himself as the team’s number one wide receiver, at least for now. Romeo Doubs is enjoying a bounce back season for the Packers and has quieted the trade rumors that abounded during the offseason.
Romeo Doubs Enjoying a Bounce Back Season for the Packers: A Rough Season
The Packers drafted Doubs in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The Nevada alum was drafted the same year as Christian Watson, but it was Doubs who picked things up quickly and made a more immediate impact.
Doubs’ best season came in 2023 when he caught 59 passes for 674 yards and eight touchdowns. He and quarterback Jordan Love developed good chemistry. Doubs was never the Packers most spectacular receiver, but he was often their most consistent. He excelled at short and intermediate routes and was a solid red zone and third down target.
Last season was a tough one for Doubs. He dropped seven passes despite missing three games due to injury and one due to a suspension. That gave him a drop percentage of 9.7 according to pro-football-reference.com. His catch total fell from 59 in 2023 to 46 in 2024 and his touchdown total was cut in half to four.
Future with the Team in Doubt
Doubs earned a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team for not showing up for practice. He was apparently unhappy with his lack of targets and overall role in the offense. He returned to the team and finished the season, but his future with the team was called into question.
After GM Brian Gutekunst drafted Matthew Golden in the first round of this year’s draft and added Savion Williams in the third round, Doubs’ future with the Packers was even more in doubt. Trade rumors popped up throughout the offseason and into training camp.
Early in the season, there were even more doubts about Doubs’ future beyond this season. The Packers traded for and signed Micah Parsons to a record-setting contract that took up a lot of cap space. Later, the Packers announced they had signed Watson to a one-year contract extension, making it even less likely that Doubs would sign another contract with the Packers.

Injuries to other receivers and a strong camp by Doubs not only earned him a roster spot but a significant role in the offense. Through four games, Doubs has caught 13 passes for 179 yards and four touchdowns. That included a three-touchdown game against the Cowboys in Week 4.
Doubs was once again a target Love counted on in the clutch. Of his 13 catches, 11 have gone for first downs and four for scores. He has also yet to drop a pass this season, cleaning up a major problem for Doubs and all of the Packers receivers in 2024.
Head coach Matt LaFleur has been impressed with Doubs’ play. “When his number has been called, he has delivered,” the coach said. “I think it’s been his approach. In four years, Rome has done everything the right way. I know there was a little blip on the screen, but I think that was a one-off. Over time, he does everything the right way in regard to how he prepares, how he supports his teammates, so it’s really cool to see a guy have success like that, and I would expect that to continue.”
The Packers will not have a dominant number one receiver this season. Instead, it will be receiver by committee again, which suits LaFleur just fine. But when the Packers need a clutch catch, Doubs is always somebody Love will look for. Doubs leads all Packers wide receivers in catches, receiving yards and touchdown catches.
The trade talk has disappeared, and Doubs will remain a Packer through the end of this season. As for his future, he will still likely not be re-signed with the Packers for 2026 as he will likely get more money on the open market. But Doubs is proving last year was a hiccup in his development and he can be relied upon as a steady and productive NFL receiver. He has a good future and will play a sizable role in the Green Bay offense this season.
