The Green Bay Packers enter training camp in 2024 as a team on a mission. Last year, they surprised many people by making the playoffs despite having one of the youngest rosters in the league. They also had an unproven quarterback in Jordan Love who had one prior NFL start. Now, the team will be looking to build on last year’s finish and hope to contend for a Super Bowl. Here are the three biggest questions facing the Green Bay Packers offense as training camp gets under way:
Biggest Questions for the Packers Offense Number Three: Who Starts Along the Offensive Line
Head coach Matt LaFleur has indicated the team will start the five best offensive linemen. The team has players who can play multiple positions, so they have the flexibility to make that happen.
Zach Tom and Elgton Jenkins are the team’s two best linemen. They are locks to start when healthy. Tom is starting training camp on the PUP list as he recovers from a torn pectoral muscle. He is expected to be ready to return before the start of the preseason.
Tom and Jenkins are also the team’s two most versatile linemen. Both players can play all five positions on the line. Last year, Tom started at right tackle while Jenkins played left guard.
Rasheed Walker is the incumbent at left tackle. He came on strong after going through a learning experience in the first half of the season.
Josh Myers starts camp as the starting center, but he’s never lived up to expectations as a second-round pick.
Sean Rhyan is the favorite at right guard after the departure of Jon Runyan. Rhyan needs to work on his pass blocking and consistency to secure the job.
First round pick Jordan Morgan can play any position but center. He has a lot to learn and needs to adjust to playing in the NFL. The Packers said they wanted to see him at tackle first, but he also got reps at both guard spots at OTAs.
Finding the five starters and getting them in place as quickly as possible to get continuity is something the coaches will want to accomplish early in camp.
Question Number Two: Who Emerges in a Crowded Receiver Room?
The Packers have a lot of young talent at wide receiver but need to figure out who starts and how the rotation will work.
When healthy, Christian Watson has the highest ceiling, but he’s struggled to stay on the field in each of his first two seasons. The Packers sent him to a hamstring specialist in Madison to try to change his injury luck.
Romeo Doubs is consistent and has excellent chemistry with Love, but will he be one of the top three on the depth chart?
Jayden Reed returns as the incumbent slot receiver. He led the team in catches and yards and tied for the most touchdown passes as a rookie. If Reed takes on a bigger role in the offense, he can increase his production as well.
Dontayvion Wicks finished the season strong and showed great burst and potential. He needs to show he can keep his play at a high level. Love indicated he saw Wicks as a potential breakout candidate this year.
Both Bo Melton and Malik Heath also showed flashes of excellence last season. They hope to build on it and assume bigger roles in the offense in 2024.
Can Love and the coaching staff keep all these receivers happy and get them enough touches? And which receivers will emerge atop the depth chart?
Biggest Questions for the Packers Offense Number One: Does Jordan Love Take the Next Step?
In the second half of the season, Love dominated and played at an elite level. He threw 18 touchdowns passes and just one interception in his final eight games. His accuracy and ability to read defenses improved. Love also threw a more accurate deep ball, something he struggled with earlier in the season.
Now, the former Utah State star needs to prove he can sustain that elite level of play. If he does, the Packers could be set up for another run as Super Bowl contenders.
The Packers are expected to sign Love to an extension before the season starts. They also have to hope the money won’t change his work ethic and attitude, which have both been exemplary thus far.
