The 2025 NFL Draft is about a month away and the Green Bay Packers have eight picks this season including three selections in the top 100. While we don’t know yet who GM Brian Gutekunst will add to the roster in April, we do know some of his tendencies and what he looks for when drafting and how that may apply to the this year’s draft which will take place in Green Bay. Here is what to expect from the Green Bay Packers in the 2025 NFL Draft.
What to Expect from the Packers at the 2025 NFL Draft, Number One: RAS Matters
RAS stands for relative athletic score. It’s something Gutekunst values highly. RAS measures the athletic ability of a player against the other players at the same position. It includes height, weight, 40-yard dash time, agility drills and other factors depending on the position.
The Packers value pure athletic ability and believe the coaching staff can teach those athletes the finer points of the game.
Players like Rashan Gary, Christian Watson, and Lukas Van Ness all scored highly on RAS and became Packers. A poor RAS score will all but take a player off the Packers draft board, especially in the early rounds. Gute prefers players with scores of 9.0 or above, so take this into consideration when projecting who the Pack may draft, especially on the first two days of the draft.
Number Two: Multiple Players at Positions of Need
Gutekunst has also shown a tendency to select two or three players at the same position in the same draft to address areas of need. He also often signs a player in free agency at the same position.
Last year, the Pack doubled down on linebackers, adding Edgerrin Cooper in the second round and Ty’Ron Hopper in the third.
Gutekunst also selected two safeties last year in Javon Bullard and Evan Williams in round two and round four respectively.
In 2023, the Packers selected tight ends in both the second and third round, in Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft. They also added three wide receivers in the draft for the second straight year.
He will address needs this year and don’t be surprised if he adds multiple offensive linemen, defensive linemen or cornerbacks.
What to Expect from the Packers at the 2025 NFL Draft, Number Three: Versatile Offensive Linemen
There are certain positions where the Packers like to have versatility, and offensive line tops the list. Gutekunst has favored players like Elgton Jenkins and Zach Tom who can play any of the five positions along the line. Both of them started at multiple positions during their college careers.
The Packers also like to draft offensive tackles with shorter arms and move them to guard or center. Sean Rhyan and Jordan Morgan are examples of that. They both played offensive tackle in college but were moved to guard in the NFL, although Morgan’s final position is still uncertain.
Look for the Pack to select at least two offensive linemen, with at least one on day three. Versatile players are usually valued by Gutekunst and the Packers.
Number Four: Versatility For WRs and DBs
When the Packers select wide receivers, they generally are looking for players who can line up in the slot or at either perimeter position. Versatility is important for the Packers. This year, wideout is a position of need with Christian Watson expected to miss at least half the season while rehabbing from knee surgery. The team also lacks a proven go-to receiver.
The Packers need help at cornerback, even after the signing of Nate Hobbs. Jaire Alexander is unlikely to return, and several depth corners left via free agency, so there is a need for depth at the position.
What to Expect from the Packers at the 2025 NFL Draft, Number Five: Will Hosting Change the Approach?
The Packers are hosting the NFL Draft for the first time ever next month. This is a momentous event for the Packers organization and the city of Green Bay. But will hosting the draft change the Packers approach this year?
The answer is probably not, although if Gutekunst decides to make a trade that takes the Packers out of the first round whether it’s for a player or trading back, he may wait until the day of the draft to announce it, so Packers fans have something to look forward to on day one of the draft.
This draft will be a special one for the Packers, but ultimately, Gutekunst will take care of business and try not to let hosting be a distraction.
